The Katelyn James Workshop Experience

When I started my photography career four years ago, I never imagined I’d be flying across the country…alone.  Let’s be honest.  I’ve never flown anywhere new without at least my husband … or a child.  Especially all the way across the country.  But when Katelyn James opened up the June Workshop Experience, I knew I had to go.

I shot a wedding on Saturday and then came home to pack and fly out at 4:30am Sunday morning.  I flew all the way to Virginia.  Alone.  Scared and not sure what to expect.  I knew I was going to room with two strangers, but little did I know they’d become my dear friends.  After meeting most of our group at a super cute ice cream shop, I finally settled in and knew it was going to be an amazing weekend.

Monday morning we all rode together to Katelyn’s home.

After seeing all the pictures on instagram, I couldn’t wait to see the inside!   We were welcomed by the cutest puppy ever, Bokeh Boy, and super cute boxes with name tags!

To say I was a little excited it was going to storm, was an understatement.  I’m pretty sure I was the only one who was happy to see rain.  Living in the desert does crazy things!  The rain held off for most of our styled shoot, and we were able to watch Katelyn pose and interact with one of her previous couples.  It’s always so fun watching someone you’ve looked up to 🙂   As day two quickly approached we were ready for head shots.  Talk about feeling uncomfortable.  And that is the reason I stay behind the camera…and not in front! But she quickly had me laughing and I felt right at ease 🙂

I love this picture.  It’s not perfect but it shows just how much fun we were having 🙂   After headshots we finished our marketing info and HOLY COW do I have a TON of notes.  Some of the girls had to leave early but for those of us who stuck around, we got website critiques.  And let me tell you – I was SO nervous.  I love my site.  I made it myself, but that’s exactly why I was nervous!  I was the last site to get viewed and lets just say the things she had to say had me in tears.  In a GOOD way!  I asked her if I could explain why I wrote what I did about my self. She said “OK”, and I began to share my story.  You see, Katelyn came into my life right when my life was falling apart.  I threw myself into education and learning everything I could about becoming a wedding photographer.  I took every single course she put out because I knew I’d never shoot newborns, family or children again.  I couldn’t, because it hurt so much inside.  As other girls in the room quickly began to cry and share their stories, we all became family.  Katelyn prayed for us and as we hugged her goodbye, I thanked her again for being such an inspiration part of my life.

This workshop was life-changing.  In my business and in my personal life.  For any other photographer out there who is debating on taking it, go!  Take the Workshop Experience.  It will change your life.   Katelyn, thank you so much for allowing us into your home and for opening up your heart.  I’m forever grateful.  And I can’t wait to see you again in November <3
