The Story of Us Part 4

I love stories!  Every one has one. The more details the better!  One of my favorite things to ask my newly engaged couples is how they met.   They’re always excited to share the details. And I can’t get enough! But, at the end, my couples always ask, “What about you?” So, I decided to share our story, too. From the party to the babies here’s our story!

  1. He’s mine
  2. Hook, line and sink-her
  3. Our First Date
  4. The Accident

The Accident

A few days after our first date it was my turn to plan our second one.  Where else would a good country girl take her new beau?  Why to Manzanita!  The Manzanita Speedway was a dirt track racing facility and they had a 1/3 mile and 1/2 mile tracks.   After a few drinks and realizing we could not hear what each other was saying, we went to get dinner.

As he drove to Outback Steakhouse, I still remember gazing over at him.  I could not believe I was on a second date.  He was the first guy that paid for drinks, dinner and movies.  He opened the door for me.  He always thanked me for hanging out.  He was so different than anyone I’d ever dated before.  He did make it pretty clear that he didn’t want anything serious in the beginning.  My heart sank when he first told me.  So naturally when I was instantly quiet and he saw the look on my face he told me we’d go out a see how things went.

So, every three days I’d hear from him and we’d hang out.  Until August 13th, 2006.  We were supposed to go to a Diamond Back vs Angel’s game with his friend Chris.  It was like a gazillion degree’s outside and I hopped into my car and got on the freeway.  Cruising and singing obnoxiously loud to Martina McBride, I moved over from the middle lane to the slow lane.  I remember checking my blind spot (my dad was a driver’s ed teacher 😉 ) and putting my blinker on and moving to the exit/enter lane.  As I moved over this little white car cut me off and then slammed on their brakes.  Naturally, to avoid hitting them I slammed on my brakes and my perfect little Miata was now in a skid.  The music stopped.  It was instantly quiet.  I spun around in a 360 twice before I came back to the exit/enter lane and slammed into the guard rail.  I managed to nail all the wood posts, and spun once more, dragging the front end against the cement wall.

My car was totaled.  But I was alive.  A mini van pulled up behind me and I opened my car door.  Staggering out of my car I managed to climb into theirs and this super sweet lady went and grabbed my cell phone.  “Hi, I just wanted to let you know your girlfriend was in a car accident.”  Instantly I thought, “OMG, don’t call me his girlfriend!  He doesn’t want anything serious!”  Then she called my mom.  I felt like everything around me was going a million miles a minute and I was standing still.  I couldn’t remember my name.  My phone number or anyone else’s.

As the paramedics were leaving, I watched his blue truck pull up.  I started walking towards him.  He got out of the truck, hands shaking sideways.  I was sure this was the end of us dating.  He walked over and threw his arms around me.  He was so worried.  Then my parents pulled up and I panicked.  My dad instantly drew up his own conclusion of what happened and we were off to the hospital.  This was the first time Mike met my parents.  Totally not ideal.

After being released with creams and medications, he took me out to eat.  I will never forget how he cut up my steak and helped feed it to me.  I had serious burns on my arms, cuts on my face and by the looks people gave me, I can only imagine what they were thinking. But that didn’t matter to him.  Over the next week, I spent every day with Mike.  He would help wash my burns and apply the medication.  He made sure when he went to work I was taken care of and he’d check on me throughout the day.  Then three days later, as we were laying on his bed watching a movie, he leans over and says, “Can I tell you something?”  My heart started pounding.  I had no idea what he was going to say.  “Sure.” I said

“I love you.”

Wait, what?  Did he just say he loves me?!  “I love you, too!” I said.  And just like my accident,it seemed like the world around us was spinning and we were standing still.

How I met my husband
